Description

Volume III of the "Battle Colors" series focuses on the unit insignia and tactical aircraft markings of the Ninth U.S. Army Air Force in the European Theater of Operations during World War II. For those readers unfamiliar with its history, a brief synopsis of the evolution of the Ninth AAF from inception to V-E Day is included in this text.

All combat elements assigned to the Ninth AAF in the UK between October 16, 1943, and May 8, 1945, are included in this work and cover Fighter, Troop Carrier, Bombardment, and Reconnaissance Groups, in addition to Night Fighter and Liaison Squadrons. A great deal of research has gone into presenting as many squadron and group insignia as possible, both official and unofficial versions. Squadron fuselage codes and recognition colors are addressed within their respective sections and include maps showing the chronological listing and dates of each unit's assigned stations from pre-invasion England to Western Europe at war's end. Each Group listing includes illustrations depicting the major types of combat aircraft flown by each squadron during the course of the war, and each depicts the proper size and placement of respective unit tactical markings.

Additional information within this text includes organizational charts depicting the full structure of the Ninth AAF. Camouflage paint schemes with diagrams showing government specifications for the official placement of insignia and tactical markings for all major USAAF combat aircraft in the ETO are also covered within this work.

Though not entirely chronological, this volume nevertheless ties in geographically with Battle Colors Volumes I and II, both of which deal with the Eighth AAF. Combat operations for the fledgling Ninth AAF actually began in the Mediterranean Theater of Operations a full year prior to being redeployed to England in preparation for the Allied invasion of the European Continent. Consequently, this volume deals specifically with those units assigned to the Ninth subsequent to that organization’s redeployment to the UK. Information pertaining to original units that served with the Ninth AAF in the MTO will be covered along with those units of the Twelfth and Fifteenth AAF in the upcoming Battle Colors Volume IV.
