Description
Alliott Verdon Roe was one of the earliest pioneers of British aviation making his first powered flight at Brooklands in 1908. In 1910 he formed the company which bore his name and Avro continued to remain at the forefront of aeronautical progress until it disappeared when it was absorbed into Hawker Siddeley Aviation in 1963. Hawker Siddeley Aviation was itself absorbed by British Aerospace in 1977.
The Avro name was renowned throughout the world as over 35,000 aircraft were built bearing the company's name with types such as the Avro 504, Anson, Lancaster, Shackleton and Vulcan becoming legendary.
This book tells the story of a small beginning which became one of the world's largest and most respected aircraft manufacturers and is enhanced by 226 photographs, many unpublished, of men and machines, giving a comprehensive coverage of this great company.
