THROUGH THE PASS — HEINZ KREBS

Artist-Signed Limited Edition — Number 376/950 — Original Certificate of Authenticity — Framed

Description

Through the Pass is a dramatic aviation artwork by German aviation artist Heinz Krebs, depicting two American Lockheed P-38 Lightning fighters of the 82nd Fighter Group, 15th United States Army Air Force, navigating a treacherous mountain pass through the snow-covered Alps.

The aircraft fly at low altitude between towering peaks, with brilliant white snow, icy blue shadows and threatening clouds emphasising the dangers of their journey.

The painting captures the extraordinary challenges faced by Allied fighter pilots operating from bases in Italy during the final winter of the Second World War.

Krebs combines meticulous aircraft detail with spectacular Alpine scenery, creating a powerful image of courage, navigation and survival.

Historical Context — The 15th Air Force and the Alpine Campaign

During the winter of 1944–1945, American fighter aircraft operating with the 15th Air Force regularly crossed the Alps from their bases in Italy to conduct missions over southern Germany.

The 82nd Fighter Group, equipped with the distinctive twin-boomed P-38 Lightning, played an important role in establishing Allied air superiority over this region.

The Alps presented formidable hazards even for experienced pilots. Severe weather, rapidly changing visibility, dangerous terrain and combat damage could make returning to base exceptionally difficult.

After combat with German fighters over southern Germany, the two aircraft depicted in Through the Pass are returning towards their bases south of the mountains.

Rather than attempting to cross the highest peaks, the pilots follow a lower route through the mountain passes.

The painting illustrates the skill and determination required to survive these dangerous wartime missions.

The Lockheed P-38 Lightning

The Lockheed P-38 Lightning was one of the most distinctive American fighters of the Second World War.

Its unusual twin-boom design, central cockpit and twin-engine configuration made it instantly recognisable.

The aircraft served in several theatres of war, carrying out fighter escort, interception, reconnaissance and ground-attack missions.

Its range and performance made it particularly valuable for operations across the vast distances and demanding terrain encountered by American air forces.

About the Artist — Heinz Krebs (c. 1930–2013)

Heinz Krebs was a German aviation artist, commercial and test pilot, and flying instructor.

Living and working in southern Germany, he combined a professional understanding of aviation with a lifelong passion for painting.

His flying experience included more than 10,000 flight hours and numerous types of powered aircraft and gliders.

This exceptional practical experience gave his paintings a convincing sense of aircraft movement, perspective and atmosphere.

Krebs became internationally recognised for his dramatic aviation subjects and historically detailed depictions of military aircraft.

His limited edition prints continue to appeal to collectors of aviation art and military history.
