Description

This atmospheric aviation art depicts British Spitfire fighters on patrol during World War II. The scene captures multiple aircraft flying over the iconic White Cliffs of Dover, rendered in warm golden and peach tones of dusk. The dramatic coastal landscape stretches below, with the chalk cliffs clearly visible against the calm waters.

The composition features several Spitfires at different positions and altitudes, with visible markings including 'PR' and 'UM' on the fuselages. The aircraft appear to be on a routine patrol mission, a common defensive operation during the Battle of Britain era. The atmospheric perspective creates depth with aircraft in the foreground sharply detailed while those in the distance fade into the hazy sky.

Philip West's work captures the solemnity and vigilance of RAF operations during the war. The limited edition print is signed by both the artist and what appears to be a veteran pilot, adding historical authenticity to this commemorative piece. The peaceful yet watchful mood reflects the constant state of readiness maintained by Fighter Command during this crucial period of British history.

SOUTHERN PATROL — PHILIP E. WEST

Limited Edition 6/850 — Signed by Philip West and Group Captain Sir Hugh Dundas — Published 1991 — Framed

Description

Southern Patrol is an atmospheric aviation artwork by celebrated British aviation artist Philip E. West, portraying Royal Air Force Spitfire fighters patrolling the southern coast of England during the Battle of Britain in 1940.

The painting depicts several Spitfires flying above the iconic white chalk cliffs of southern England, with the waters of the English Channel stretching towards the horizon.

Bathed in warm evening light, the aircraft patrol the coast in a moment of relative calm, conveying the vigilance and companionship of the pilots who defended Britain during the summer and autumn of 1940.

Historical Context — The Battle of Britain

During the Battle of Britain, RAF Fighter Command defended the United Kingdom against attacks by the German Luftwaffe.

The artwork features Spitfires associated with two fighter squadrons operating in No. 10 Group's southern sector:

  • No. 609 Squadron, identified by the code PR, based at Middle Wallop.

  • No. 152 Squadron, identified by the code UM, operating from RAF Warmwell.

Both squadrons contributed to the defence of southern England during this critical period.

Philip West's painting captures a quieter moment at the end of a patrol, emphasising the freedom of flight and the close bonds among fighter pilots.
