Voorwoord door de heer C. Paulus, gouverneur van de provincie Antwerpen, voor het 'Antwerp Airport Magazine' - 2000

Antwerp Airport Magazine', dat nu reeds voor de negende keer verschijnt, is een onmisbaar instrument geworden voor allen die informatie wensen over de luchthaven van Antwerpen. En dat zijn er velen. Onze luchthaven ligt immers maar op 5 km van het stadscentrum en is dus een ideale aankomstplaats, zowel voor degene die de gonzende bedrijvigheid van onze economie opzoekt, als voor de congresganger of toerist die van de gezellige ambiance en het grote culturele aanbod in de Scheldestad wil proeven.

Tevens biedt de Antwerpse luchthaven het voordeel van de kleinschaligheid. In tegenstelling tot vele internationale luchthavens, die uitblinken door onpersoonlijkheid en overbevolking, functioneert Antwerp Airport nog op mensenmaat. De passagiers kunnen er rekenen op een attente persoonlijke service. Bovendien hoeven zij slechts 30 minuten voor het opstijgen van hun vliegtuig aanwezig te zijn, niet on- belangrijk voor de vele zakenreizigers voor wie tijd geld is. Om de klant van nu en van morgen nog beter en sneller van dienst te zijn, werd de luchthaven trouwens ook sterk gemoderniseerd en stevig uitgebreid met een ruim aanbod van diensten en Inter-Europese lijnverbindingen met Amsterdam, Genève en London City. Een regionale luchthaven zoals die van Antwerpen heeft dus zonder enige twijfel een pak voordelen. Daarom geloof ik rotsvast in de toekomst ervan. Maar eveneens ben ik ervan overtuigd dat om die toekomst veilig te stellen een aantal infrastructuurwerken dringend noodzakelijk zijn, die onze luchthaven moeten toelaten de recente evoluties in de luchtvaart te trotseren. Hopelijk worden door de Vlaamse overheid dan ook spoedig de juiste beslissingen getroffen in het besef dat de luchthaven van onschatbaar belang is voor het economische leven van deze regio.

Antwerp Airport Magazine - now published for the ninth time - has become the indispensable guide for the many who need information on Antwerp airport. After all, our airport is situated at only 5 km from the city centre which turns it into an ideal place of arrival, both for those who come to look for our economy's humming activity, as for the congress participants or tourists who just want to taste the pleasant atmosphere and extensive cultural diversity of the city on the Scheldt.

Antwerp airport also benefits from its compactness. Indeed, as opposed to many large international airports, where the personal touch is lost in the crowds, Antwerp airport still functions on a humane scale. Passengers may expect a kind and personal service and they only have to check in 30 minutes prior to take-off, an important advantage for the many business travellers whose time is money. And in order to serve today's and tomorrow's customers even better, the airport has also been extensively modernised, offering a large choice of services and scheduled connections to Amsterdam, Geneva and London City.

Hence, a regional airport like Antwerp's possesses many advantages. That is why I truly believe in its future. But, I also realise that - in order to safeguard that future and to enable our airport to face the recent evolution in aviation - it is urgently necessary to develop its infrastructure. That is why I hope that the Flemish Government - undoubtedly fully aware of the airport's tremendous importance for the economic life of this region - will soon take the decisions that impose themselves.
