Description
It is nowhere more obvious than in the area of modern combat aircraft that this is a crucial time in the defence of the Western world. Over the past decade the NATO allies and friends have sunk a large portion of their defence budgets into new aircraft programmes with the goal of maintaining the qualitative edge which they have traditionally enjoyed over the more simply equipped but numerically far superior air arms of the Warsaw Pact countries and their "client states".
Now the Soviet bloc is itself modernizing its own air strength – a return move in the delicate balance of military power which has helped keep a fragile peace in Central Europe for about forty years. The balance is being re-adjusted, and if it is to be maintained the warplanes described in these pages are the types on which the Western world must depend for the rest of the 1980s and into the 1990s.
Since the book is a review of the Western powers' most important modern fixed-wing tactical aircraft, it includes such potent attack aircraft as the A-10, F-117 and ageing but still vital Buccaneer. Furthermore, chapter-by-chapter the book develops into a loosely structured encyclopedia of modern aerospace technology, giving the reader a glimpse of what lies beneath the skins of the aircraft.
An additional chapter discusses new projects which are now on the designers' drawing boards or being tested in the workshops or in the air, while another reviews the "smart" precision-guided weapons that many Western aircraft carry.
This magnificent, most informative volume contains 25 full colour three-view drawings of heavily armed aircraft types, more than 180 dramatic colour photographs, and over 175 diagrams and other artworks which detail alternative and possible weapon loads, performance and other specific attributes of the aircraft.
At least fifteen of the aircraft types described here have already seen combat, and some are probably fighting in the skies as you read this. This fascinating book seems likely to be a guide to the warplanes of tomorrow's headlines.
