Description
Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor on 7 December 1941, which virtually eliminated the US Pacific Fleet, also destroyed 230 of the 400 aircraft based in Hawaii by the USAAF and US Navy. From that crippling blow, America's two major air arms recovered on a massive scale: the Army Air Force reached a peak strength of over 78,000 aircraft in 1944, the Navy a total of nearly 41,000 in 1945. Equally impressive were the huge numbers of aircraft produced by the USA for the other Allied air forces.
American Aircraft of World War 2 in Colour follows the style of Kenneth Munson's earlier German Aircraft in presenting an invaluable guide to more than 100 of the principal types of American aircraft used by the US forces and their Allies during 1939-45, more than 60 of these being portrayed in full colour against a background text outlining their development and operational use. Technical specifications are presented conveniently in separate boxes, to facilitate comparison of data and to avoid interrupting the main narrative.
