Description
North-East England has been involved with aviation from the very early days of manned flight. At the outbreak of war in 1939, however, the counties of Northumberland and Durham were ill-prepared for the task that loomed ahead. Military airfields were limited to one pre-war bomber station at Usworth in Sunderland, an Armament Practice Camp at Hartlepool, and training airfields at Woolsington and West.
During the wartime period, all four of these airfields came under the control of Fighter Command, and some seven additional military airfields were built to support the war effort. Notably, Ouston in Northumberland became the Fighter Sector Headquarters, and Middleton St George in Durham played a key role in Bomber Command operations. Other airfields, such as Boulmer, Brunton, Eshott, Milfield, and Morpeth, made important contributions to the air war, serving as training grounds for new pilots and flight crews.
This book describes the history of each airfield and highlights the major operations and raids carried out from them. The effects of the war on the daily lives of the people of North-East England and the dangers they faced are also detailed.
Martyn Chorlton's action-packed book will appeal equally to aviation enthusiasts and to local people who recall the era when the skies above the North-East droned with the sound of departing and returning aircraft.
