Description
FOREWORD
The importance of aircraft recognition to members of all combatant and civil defence services is now universally appreciated. From the outbreak of war "Flight" produced silhouettes and charts which have been extensively used by the Services and, regularly week by week, special attention has been devoted to the science of aircraft identification.
As in the case of any other new subject, the method of disseminating knowledge had to be perfected until experience finally evolved an efficient technique. Problems and questions had to be solved and answered in the light of steadily accumulating information. Various angles of approach were tried out and different methods of treatment applied. Whilst it is not suggested that finality has necessarily been reached, the original and graphic nature of the aircraft recognition series reproduced in this booklet has stood the test of practical application over a period of time, and won universal approval.
Senior officers of the R.A.F., those charged with the instruction of anti-aircraft personnel, and members of other fighting services have from time to time testified to the instructive value of this particular recognition feature. Many have made a habit of preserving each successive number for instructional purposes, and it is in response to numerous appeals that this booklet has been prepared, embodying reprints of all the most important types so far included in the weekly series appearing in "Flight."
Acknowledgment should be made to Norman D. Ryder, an experienced airman and pilot, for his painstaking work in compiling the data, and to "J.P." for the excellent drawings.
