Description

ABOUT THIS BOOK
This, I hope, is an aviation history with a difference. The important dates, facts and figures that one expects to find in such a book are here, but an attempt has been made to put them into fresh perspective. Every fact in this book is founded on the very latest research, ... ( ... ) Some persistent errors in recorded history are corrected for the first time, such as the identity of the first jet - fighter used in action in the Second World War.
( ... ) Biggest difference of all between this aviation history and others is that the reader is faced repeatedly with the question " Is this the kind of flying about which the pioneers dreamed for so many years ? In fact, is it flying at all ? " The answer may be that only the amateur in his ultra - light home - built aeroplane and the glider pilot really know what it is to fly.

À PROPOS DE CET AUTEUR
John W.R. Taylor

John William Ransom Taylor O.B.E., Hon. D.Eng., F.R.Ae.S., F.R.Hist.S., A.F.I.A.A. ( June 8th, 1922 - December 12th, 1999 ) was educated at Ely Cathedral Choir School ( King's School, Ely ) and Soham Grammar School ( both in Cambridgeshire, England ).

He trained as a draughtsman and joined Hawker Aircraft in 1941. There he worked on the development of the Hurricane fighter and its successors. His specialisation was rectifying design defects.

He joined Jane's as Editorial Assistant on Jane's All the World's Aircraft in 1955 and four years later he took over as Editor. Until the late 1960's he edited this volume with virtually no editorial support but his love of aviation was such that this was a challenge he enjoyed.

He retired as Editor in 1989, just as the Iron Curtain obscuring the Soviet Bloc's technology started to lift. John W.R. Taylor, who lived to the age of 77, was a master of a parallel art to Kremlinology, he could deduce the performance of Soviet military equipment from blurred photographs.

À PROPOS DE CET EDITEUR
THE HAMLYN PUBLISHING GROUP LTD
Hamlyn is a United Kingdom publishing company founded by Paul Hamlyn ( 1926 - 2001 ) in 1950 with an initial investment of £350. His desire was to create " fine books with the common touch " which remains the foundation of its commercial success. Paul Hamlyn sold the company to the International Publishing Company ( now Time Inc. U.K. ) in 1964, but stayed on until 1969. In 1964, Hamlyn commenced in Australia under the management of Kevin Weldon. It owned an interest in the Australian independent paperback publisher Sun Books from 1968 until 1971 when Macmillan Australia acquired that company. Paul Hamlyn bought the company back in 1986 and added it to the holdings of his new company, Octopus Books. Octopus Books was sold in 1987 to Reed International. Hamlyn's children's division was sold to the Egmont Group in 1998. Hachette Livre bought Octopus in 2001. Hamlyn is an international publisher of non - fiction illustrated books. Two thirds of the business is in international, North American and export markets. Octopus Books was sold to Lagardère Group and managed under Lagardère Publishing. ( source : Wikipedia )
