Description
Air War - Vietnam presents a detailed and fully illustrated history of U.S. aerial operations in Indo-China between 1964 and 1973, plus an account of the Mayaguez incident of May 1975. With well-informed assessments of the aircraft and weaponry involved, it describes and discusses the enormous number of missions flown by a multitude of aircraft types—including F-105 Thunderchiefs, F-100 Super Sabres, F-4 Phantoms, F-111s, B-57 bombers, 'Jolly Green Giant' helicopters, and the controversial B-52 heavy bombers.
Apart from the political repercussions of this traumatic, divisive and, ultimately, humiliating war for the Americans, Vietnam had another significance: it was the first war fought with a new generation of weapons that are in the process of revolutionizing the structures and tactics of armies and air forces. Their impact has been dramatic:
• 'Smart' bombs—remotely-piloted munitions operated by electro-optics and laser guides, able to knock out heavily defended bridges from miles away.
• SAM missiles aimed by infra-red homing devices, carried by a single soldier and capable of destroying helicopters and slow-moving aircraft.
• High-altitude aircraft carrying thousands of pounds of explosive power and able to pinpoint targets far above the range of conventional anti-aircraft guns.
• Electronics counter-defences against surface-to-air missiles.
• Sensors.
• Infra-red equipment, and much more.
As Drew Middleton says in his Introduction to the book, "No war in the future will be unaffected by its technological and tactical weapons. The reader will find in these pages more than a record of old battles. If perceptive, he will encounter the future."
