Description
In August 1914, just a few days after the outbreak of the First World War, two flimsy aeroplanes – one French, the other German – circled each other cautiously over the front line. Their pilots took a few pot-shots at one another with revolvers – their only weapons – then waved and went their separate ways. It was the first recorded instance of air combat. Just half a century later, jets armed with deadly air-to-air missiles were fighting one another six miles above the earth at close to the speed of sound.
Aerial Combat traces the story of air warfare from those early days to the present time. It records the history of air fighting from the duels over Flanders during 1914-18, when young men fought and died for mastery of the sky and became legends, through the grim days of the Second World War, when the outcome of air battles decided the fate of nations, to the jet battles of the conflicts that followed in Korea, Vietnam and the Middle East.
Robert Jackson's vivid portrayal of this story of skill, courage and tremendous technological achievement is complemented by over 140 photographs and maps to give a clear and comprehensive picture of the first fifty years of aerial combat.
