Description
No. 2 Group was formed in Bomber Command to support the Army. After equipping with Bristol Blenheims, it specialized in daylight operations and engaged in the first raid of the war. Following its role in the Norwegian campaign, it was thrown into the struggle to save France, where heavy losses ensued during operations demanding great courage. A hazardous anti-shipping campaign took the Group to Malta, while night intruder operations targeted enemy airfields. Fighter-escorted attacks on occupied territory continued until the 1944 Allied landings in France, where support to the invasion was subsequently provided, alongside an effective night interdictor campaign. The Group mounted many spectacular operations, particularly when using de Havilland Mosquitoes.
This is indeed a story of immense courage. Based upon records maintained by Royal Air Force Commands, Groups, and Squadrons, together with personal accounts by those who flew with the Group, the book gives a detailed day-by-day picture of operations, their planning, and execution, illustrated by detailed maps.
The author analysed every sortie flown by the Group before producing this full record of wartime activities. Appendices provide plentiful details of the aircraft, the squadrons, and the Group’s wartime effort.
