Kunst en vliegwerk
Onze vertrouwde dikke Van Dale komt met een wat bedenkelijke verklaring bij het begrip „kunst en vliegwerk". „Door allerlei kunstmiddelen kwam men er toe", zo luidt de wat denigrerende omschrijving. Ik denk, dat Thijs Postma intussen een heel nieuwe en vooral eigen dimensie heeft gegeven aan deze oer-Hollandse uitdrukking.
Het is met de vaderlandse schilderkunst in de loop der eeuwen wat eigenaardig gesteld. Schilders en tekenaars wierpen zich steeds opnieuw op de typisch Hollandse elementen zoals daar waren het knusse binnenhuis, het portret, het landschap met daarboven wolkenluchten zoals die bijna nergens ter wereld zo indrukwekkend afwisselend zijn, de zee en de scheepvaart, het stilleven.
Het nieuwe element dat daaraan al meer dan een halve eeuw werd toegevoegd: de luchtvaart, de vliegerij bleef stiefkind, vermocht schilder en tekenaar in dit land vreemd genoeg nauwelijks boeien. Totdat Thijs Postma kwam. Niet alleen zijn grote liefde voor de vliegerij ligt ten grondslag aan zijn kunstenaarschap. Hij is vooral een van de zeer weinigen in ons land voor wie luchtvaart en het vliegtuig nauwelijks geheimen meer kent. Een bezeten deskundige, maar bovenal, denk ik, een kunstenaar die evenals zijn kunstbroeders van weleer naar de werkelijkheid tekent en penseelt.
In dit boek een deel van zijn, naar mijn stellige overtuiging, onvergankelijk werk. Ik mag hopen dat het Thijs Postma nog lang gegeven mag zijn voort te gaan en dat hij zich geïnspireerd mag blijven voelen in de wetenschap dat hij nu al de erkenning heeft verworven als de man van kunst en vliegwerk in de allerbeste, of liever gezegd, de nieuwe betekenis van het woord.

A high flier
Over the years Dutch art has become idiosyncratic. Paintings and drawings explored again and again the typical Dutch elements: the cosy interior, the portrait, the landscape and the ever-changing clouds such a can be found practically nowhere else in the world, the sea and ships, the still-life.
The new element that was added more than fifty years ago, air travel, flying, has remained a Cinderella. Few artists in this country appear to be influenced by it. Until Postma came along. His artistry is not based on his love of flying in itself. He is one of the very few people in this country for whom flying and aircraft retain very few secrets. An expert obsessed with his subject, I think; but above all an artist who paints and draws things as they are, like his fellow-artists in former days.
This book illustrates part of his work, which in my firm conviction is imperishable. I hope Thijs Postma may long be spared to continue his work and that he may continue to be inspired by the knowledge that he has now found recognition as rising to a considerable height in the best, or rather in all senses, of the world.
