Description
Introduction
( … ) When Soviet aviation entered the jet age, however, the Mikoyan / Gurevich OKB was at the forefront. ( … ) Initially known as the I - 300 ( manufacturer's designation izdeliye F ) and later as the MiG - 9 ( N.A.T.O. reporting name Fargo ), the Mikoyan OKB's first jet fighter made its maiden flight on April 24th, 1946.
( ... ) Over the years the design was progressively improved ; ( ... ) The MiG - 15 was built in huge numbers at nine ( ! ) factories in the Soviet Union, as well as under licence in China, Czechoslovakia and Poland ; ( ... ) The aircraft was so successful that it paved the way for Mikoyan ( and generally Soviet ) fighter design for the next decade. ( ... )
Faced with the need to counter the threat posed by new fighter jets under development in the U.S.A. and their N.A.T.O. allies, the Soviet Air Force demanded higher performance. This could be achieved by developing an all - new fighter or by redesigning the existing MiG - 15 ( installing a more powerful engine, increasing wing sweep to increase speed, etc... ). The Mikoyan OKB chose boh ways. The second, evolutionary approach produced the fighter which is the subject of this book - the MiG - 17 ; a fighter which equalled the fame of its predecessor and saw no less action than the MiG - 15.
