The standard type was developed in mid of 1942 as the result of modernization of the Bureau. It used the Yak-7 fighter as the main design basis for the new type. The long range Yak-9DD was an early modification. Serial production began in 1943 and the new version became available around the same time as the first successful offensive by the Soviet Army. Long-range fighter with increased fuel load Yak-9DD (with a range in excess of 2000 km) was constructed using the Yak-9T airframe. Fuel capacity was further increased by a redesign of the internal areas without altering the aircraft's exterior appearance or aerodynamic properties. The Yak-9DD was armed with an automatic cannon of smaller caliber than on the Yak-9T, which was necessary to preserve weight and flight characteristics. The Yak-9DD was in constant demand as an escort for bombers and for long-range reconnaissance missions. In some cases they even commenced combat operations deep in the enemy territory. The most famous were escorted American B-17s from Bari in Italy to Poltava in the USSR during the bombing of Rumanian petroleum industry (Operation Frantic) and was used for patrol and reconnaissance tasks.
