Beginning in April 1945, these flights often lasted eight hours and covered vast stretches of open ocean, making them the longest combat missions ever flown by P-51s. Pilots faced enemy aircraft, anti-aircraft fire, severe weather, and navigation challenges. The groups also conducted strikes against the Bonin Islands and maintained combat air patrols over Iwo Jima.
