Although initially planned as a Typhoon Mk.II, extensive redesign resulted in an entirely new aircraft. A thinner, more elliptical wing improved speed but required additional fuselage fuel, engine repositioning, and enlarged tail surfaces. After trials with several engines, the Tempest Mk.V powered by the Napier Sabre II emerged as the main production variant. Entering service in 1944, it excelled at low and medium altitudes, proving especially effective against V-1 flying bombs and as a ground-attack fighter.
