Racing monoplanes competing for the Schneider Trophy had proven much faster. R.J. Mitchell designer of the Supermarine S.6B helped set a world speed record of 407 mph or 655 km\/h in 1931. Inspired by such achievements the British Air Ministry issued Specification F.7\/30 calling for a modern fighter capable of 250 mph or 400 km\/h. Ironically Mitchell’s response the Supermarine Type 224 was a disappointing biplane heavily strut-braced and underpowered and ended up being the slowest contender.
