Description
The Ryan XF2R-1 Dark Shark was a follow-on development of Ryan's earlier FR-1 Fireball. The U.S. Navy had issued a requirement for a single seat, land-based, dual-powered fighter equipped with both a turboprop and a turbojet engine. Consequently, Ryan modified FR-1 BuNo 39961 by adding a new front fuselage, engine, and four-bladed propeller at the nose and an enlarged fin fillet to the lower leading edge of the vertical fin. The Dark Shark first flew in November of 1946.
The XF2R-1 was powered by a 1700 shp General Electric TG-100 gas-turbine engine turning a four-bladed Hamilton Standard propeller. An additional 550 LBS of thrust were provided by the engine's exhaust, which were ducted out the fuselage sides adjacent to the cockpit. A single 1600 LBST J-31-GE-3 turbojet engine was mounted in the aft fuselage - the same engine used in the FR-1. Apart from the front engine and fin fillet changes, the XF2R-1 also lacked folding wings and carrier catapult and arresting gear. The general layout and tricycle landing gear of the FR-1 were retained. The Dark Shark is not known to have carried armament, but this is likely to have been identical to the FR-1: four 4 x .50 cal-iber machine guns, up to two 1,000 LB bombs, and four 5-inch rockets.
