Its primary role was to protect the Royal Navy's fleet from Soviet long-range reconnaissance and bomber aircraft. The Sea Harrier FRS1 was basically a navalised version of the RAF Harrier GR3, but incorporated major modifications for maritime use. The most notable change was the raised cockpit position which gave the pilot a better view for carrier deck landings. A new radar system was also fitted to enable the Sea Harrier to find both air and sea targets. During the 1982 Falklands conflict, Sea Harriers played a major role in Britain's victory. Their agility and sophisticated weapons systems enabled them to overcome Argentina's Mirage fighters, which although faster, were operating at maximum range.
