Powered by a turbo-supercharged Pratt and Whitney R-1830 radial engine it offered strong high-altitude performance for its time. The aircraft featured four heavy machine guns and a streamlined airframe but lacked armor and self-sealing tanks which limited its survivability in combat. Though unsuitable for frontline service the P-43 found a role in reconnaissance and training with many examples supplied to China under Lend-Lease.
