First flown in 1942, it featured a new airframe, excellent high-altitude performance, and heavy armament of three 20 mm cannons and two 12.7 mm machine guns. Only limited numbers were produced due to engine shortages and Italy’s war situation. Operated by No. 362 Squadriglia, it excelled against USAAF bombers but was vulnerable at low altitude, especially against Spitfires. A few Re.2005s were used by the Aeronautica Nazionale Repubblicana and captured by the Luftwaffe, with most destroyed during the war.
