Created to meet foreign requirements it featured a more powerful radial engine and a number of structural changes including a redesigned fuselage rear section modified cockpit layout and extended bomb bay. The prototype first flew in 1936 and serial production began soon after at the State Aviation Works. Bulgaria became the main customer ordering several batches of PZL 43A aircraft which entered service from 1937 onward. Later experimental variants tested different engines armament layouts and cooling systems influencing the related PZL 46 program. Although considered modern at the time the PZL 43 saw limited combat use and did not play a major role in the 1939 campaign.
