Powered by a Shvetsov radial engine, it had improved speed and agility. Armed with four 7.62 mm machine guns and capable of carrying bombs or rockets, the I-153 was effective in early WWII and the Winter War. However, by 1941 it was outclassed by faster monoplane fighters. Still, it served in combat, training, and secondary roles.
