It was the first American aircraft to be specially designed as a night fighter and was given the nickname Black Widow because it was painted totally black. The initial production series P-61 A had a fully movable MG turret behind the cockpit equipped with four .50 cal. MGs. There were four 20 mm cannon mounted in the ventral position. Due to problems with the MG turret it was omitted from the P-61 B, which received numerous fundamental improvements. The maximum speed was almost 600 km\/h.
