It was in 1940, when British Buying Committee asked North American Aviation (NAA) to build the Curtiss P-40s for the RAF. NAA president James Kindleberger offered Britons development of a much better plane instead. Britons agreed and the design team led by chief designer Edward Schmued, who was German immigrant with Austrian roots, commenced their work on it.
