In 1940, the RAF commissioned North American Aviation to design a new fighter, leading to the rapid development of the NA-73X prototype, which first flew in October 1940. Powered initially by the Allison V-12 engine, early Mustangs offered excellent speed and range at low altitude but weak high-altitude performance, resulting in reconnaissance and ground-attack use. The breakthrough came with the installation of the Rolls-Royce Merlin engine, built in the USA by Packard, transforming the Mustang into a superb high-altitude escort fighter.
