It started in 1940, when British Buying Committee asked North American Aviation (NAA) to build the Curtiss P-40 for the RAF, but NAA president James Kindelberger offered Britons the development of a much better plane instead. Britons agreed and the design was started by chief designer Edgar Schmued, who was a German immigrant with Austrian roots. Schmued started to work.
