The aircraft gained fame with the more powerful Packard-built Merlin engine in the P-51B\/C, known to the RAF as the Mustang III. Equipped with the bubble Malcolm canopy, long-range fuel tanks, and four 12.7 mm machine guns, it reached 711 km\/h at 7,460 m.
