Kelly Johnson for the Lockheed Aircraft Company in Burbank, California, U.S.A., the XP-38 first flew on 27 January 1939, with Ben Kelsey at the controls. Nicknamed the 'any nation during WW2, with its twin engined twin boom layout. The P-38E was the first mass produced version of the fighter, however, it was the P-38F that was the first Lightning to see extensive combat use.

Although it did not incorporate as many improvements as the United States Air Corps would have liked, it was the only genuine high altitude fighter in the Army inventory in mid 1942. It began to see large scale action in North Africa and the Pacific by late 1942. The following 1,082 P-38G versions used the Allison F-10 engines of 1,150hp each at 25,000ft (7,620m) and had an external load capacity of up to 4,000lbs (1,814kg) of bombs mounted on wing pylons located just inboard of the engine nacelles.

Two different External fuel tanks (75 or 150 U.S. Gallons) could also be carried in place of bombs on these pylons, for long range fighter escort missions. The follow on P-38H used the more powerful 1,240hp F-15 Allison engines, and was equipped with the first fully automatic supercharger and oil cooler controls for its larger radiators. 601 P-38H versions were delivered by August 1943 and saw action on all fronts and all theaters of the war. All versions of the Lightning also produced as unarmed high speed, F-5 high altitude photo reconnaissance aircraft.

More to read about the KIT here, thanks to scalemates, a Belgian Scale modeling database

https://aviation.brussels/products/maquette-a-monter-p-38f-g-h-lightning-beautiful-lass-hasegawa-n-09103-1-48-like-new-inside-unopened
