Powered by an Allison V-1710 engine, it offered good speed and maneuverability at lower altitudes but lacked high-altitude performance compared to later Merlin-powered versions. Entering service in 1942, it was used primarily by the US Army Air Forces and the RAF, where it was known as the Mustang II. Armament consisted of four 12.7 mm machine guns and it could carry bombs for ground attack missions.
