The project began in 1938, with Nakajima commissioned to create a fast, powerful fighter equipped with a cannon and machine guns. The prototype, completed in August 1940, was built around the 1,250 hp Nakajima Ha-41 radial engine, resulting in a large frontal area and small, thin wings that caused high take-off and landing speeds, mitigated by innovative “butterfly” Fowler flaps. Armament initially consisted of two 7.7 mm machine guns in the cowling and two 12.7 mm guns in the wings. Officially adopted in February 1942, the Type 2 entered production as the Model I, followed by the more powerful Model II in December 1942, which included Koh, Otsu, and Hei variants with differing gun and rocket configurations. The Hei became the most numerous, featuring four Ho-103 12.7 mm guns and an upgraded optical gunsight, making the Ki-44 a formidable high-speed interceptor for the IJAAF.

More to read about the KIT here, thanks to scalemates, a Belgian Scale modeling database

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0270/3015/9446/files/IMG_1998_f133ecf3-c13d-4bc2-8fe7-838f3504e1d0.JPG?v=1769251958
https://aviation.brussels/products/maquette-a-monter-nakajima-ki44-shoki-tojo-prototype-47th-independent-flight-company-hasegawa-n-07302-1-48
