Test flights revealed serious stability problems, delaying mass production. After major improvements—including a lengthened fuselage and powerful Daimler-Benz DB 603 engines—the aircraft entered service in 1942 as the Me 410. During WWII the Luftwaffe demanded heavier air-to-air armament, leading to specialized variants. The Me 410 B-2\/U2 was equipped with a gun pod carrying two 20 mm MG 151 cannons in the bomb bay instead of bombs. It could also carry WGR rockets under the wings. The later Me 410 B-2\/U2\/R4 added an external gun pod with two more MG 151 cannons, greatly increasing firepower.
