It was the first operational jet-powered fighter aircraft developed during WWII. Although the Me262 was originally intended to be used as a fighter, as handed by experienced and well-trained pilots there was no shortage of pilots, and there was no sufficient training for the new pilots. Due to the changing operational environment and combat aircraft which differed from conventional propeller-driven fighter aircraft, a further development and expansion of the Me262 was needed. This was the Me262B-1a having a second seat for the instructor, a double system of controls, instruments and fuel tanks. Although initially was a project of the definitive Me262 night fighter, the shortage of daylight single-seaters meant that the Me262 night fighter switched the trainer production. The Me262B-1a\/U1 night fighter with additional fuel tanks for fuel and radar system. The Me262B-1a\/U1 was converted from the trainer by simply adding FuG218 Neptun radar system and two nose-mounted MK108 30mm cannons. In project design, the Me262B-2a, with a fuselage stretch to accommodate additional fuel tanks and 15 serials for training purposes was planned but never completed. The first Me262B-1a\/U1 night fighters went into service with radar Neptun FuG218 \u0026amp; Naxos FuG350 in defense of Berlin during February-March 1945.
