Early in the war it served as an escort fighter, but during the Battle of Britain its limited range led to its primary use as a defensive interceptor. As the conflict evolved, the Bf 109G variant was introduced and became the most widely produced version. Powered by the 1,475 hp Daimler-Benz DB 605A engine, the lightweight aircraft combined speed, firepower, and agility.
