During the latter he adopted his famous Mickey Mouse emblem, painted on the side of his Messerschmitt Bf 109.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eGalland became one of the Luftwaffe's leading fighter commanders and was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves, Swords and Diamonds, one of Germany's highest military decorations. He later commanded Germany's fighter forces and openly advocated improvements in aircraft and pilot equipment.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBecause of disagreements with Hitler and the Luftwaffe leadership, Galland was relieved of his command in 1945.
