The E-3 saw heavy action in Poland, Norway, France, and the Battle of Britain. Externally it was identified by its wing-mounted 20 mm barrels and rounded early canopy. The later E-4 kept the same basic design but adopted a square canopy, while the E-7 added a rack for a 300-liter drop tank or bomb and often featured a pointed spinner.
