A low-wing, single-seat monoplane, the Bf 109 was designed by Prof. Willy Messerschmitt in 1934. The type first saw combat during the Spanish Civil War in 1937 and two years later, formed the spearhead of the Luftwaffe's fighter units in their Blitzkrieg across Europe. As well as proving itself to be a capable fighter in Europe, the 109E also found fame and many kills operating in the North African desert in support of Rommel's Afrika Korps. Here the 109E found itself pitted against a mixed force of Hurricanes and P40s, with Spitfires only arriving later after the 109E proved its dominance against the inferior Allied planes. More than 33,000 Bf 109s of all variants were produced, a number greater than any other wartime aircraft. The 109E was powered by a 1,100hp Daimler-Benz DB601 engine, giving a maximum speed of 570km\/h (354mph).
