Powered by a single Allison J71 turbojet engine, the F3H-2 could reach speeds of approximately 1,150 km\/h (715 mph) and operate effectively from aircraft carriers in a variety of conditions. The aircraft was armed with four 20 mm cannons and could carry air-to-air missiles such as the AIM-9 Sidewinder and AIM-7 Sparrow, making it one of the first Navy fighters designed to employ guided missile weaponry.
