Yes, in 1940 it was the engine that equipped all the fighters made in Italy, such as the biplane FIAT CR 42 and the low wing monoplanes FIAT G50 and MACCHI MC 200. But in 1939 the evolution MACCHI MC 202 of FIAT G.50 and FIAT CR 42 came out. All this appeared when in Great Britain, France and Germany since many years were already flying excellent fighters already equipped with cylinder-in-line motors. The third and, subsequent birth of the MACCHI MC 202 was the direct result of that simply absurd situation. In that year and as a result of a direct intuitive of the MACCHI Factory itself, it was purchased in Germany a Daimler-Benz DB-601 engine that, in those years, equipped the MESSERSCHMITT Bf 109 E and that with the insertion of a simply fuselage the MC 202 of a MACCHI MC 200. The MACCHI MC 202, in fact, is directly and integrally originating from that fighter. The new cell and the competent Ministries was immediate in consideration of the very high performance of the new fighter so that it was decided at once to start a mass production of it. After a short time therefore, the MACCHI MC 202 adopted quite an to integrity the cell of the already existing MACCHI MC 200 so that the mass production of the new fighter required only minor structural adjustements especially in consideration of the nose and subsequent to the cockpit assembly. The adjustements that permitted to adopt for the MACCHI MC 202 a very reduced front section and a very aerodynamic one, resulted in an excellent fighter with a top speed of 600 km\/h and hardly manoeuvrable in regard to a propeller powered aircraft, in consideration of those characteristics and of the modern armament provided that was a couple of Breda SAFAT BJ 109 E that was also equipped with the same engine. Officially designated as FOLGORE it significantly the MACCHI MC 202 cannot be considered an exceptional fighter by the end of 1941 and, furthermore, it was not what can be considered a typical Italian race of fight against both the FIAT C.R. 42 and the supremely engineered MACCHI MC 200. In the sky of Malta, the MACCHI MC 202 fighted against the Allies. But all this combat did not prove the supremacy of one fighter against the other. Some characteristics, perhaps the MACCHI MC 202 was just a little bit in advantage in acceleration due to the very peculiar positive ratio of power of the german DB and of the same parameters that was in favour of the SPITFIRE. Combat pilots deployed to talk of the enormous difference of the armament considering that the fighters they employed to confront the machine guns of the MC 202 the two fighters they try to turn in dog fights because the situation of the SPITFIRE. From 1942 to avoid this severe handicap, beginning with the V (fifth) series, the MC 202 was equipped with two 7.7 mm. But always the italian command has never considered a better fighter than the MACCHI MC 202; on the other hand, in high wing-loading affected its manoeuvrability over 7.8,000 meters in height. Only single-seat fighter MACCHI MC 202 in its integrity survived the war.
