Description
The Japanese Army Ki-61 Hien (code named "Tony" by the allied forces) was first encountered in combat by the 5th Air Force in June 1943. The appearance of the Ki-61 in the skies of the Pacific came as an unpleasant surprise to the Allied pilots. With its liquid-cooled inline engine, it looked very similar to the German Bf 109, which was confirmed when its high speed and good performance became apparent. The Ki-61 was well-armed and armored, and proved a formidable opponent in combat. The Japanese army Ki-61 was one of the few mass-produced Japanese fighters of the war to use a liquid-cooled inline V engine for power. Its wings were evenly tapered on both the leading and trailing edges, and it had self-sealing fuel tanks and pilot armor. This was a big improvement over the A6M "Zero" Fighter.
