Description
A twin-engined, two-seater fighter has certain advantages over single-engined, single-pilot planes; for example, the crewman sitting behind the pilot can man a rearward-facing gun to defend against attack from the "six o'clock" position; the second engine provides plentiful horsepower; large airframe size means a larger fuel capacity, in turn meaning longer range; and each aircraft can capable of many different weapons configurations. The top speed of the Ki-45-kai surpassed 540km/h, and both climb and operational cruising range were improved over the Ki-45.
The design made its official public debut after formal IJA adoption as "Type 2 Two-seater Fighter" in February 1942. A total of 1690 aircraft were produced. Differences in main armament configuration saw model variants designated as "Ko", "Otsu", "Hei" and "Tei", respectively. The "Tei" saw the fitting of two Ho-203 37mm cannons to the upper fuselage of the central "flat" section.
Two 12.7mm machine guns were installed between the front and rear cockpit positions. Fitted to the engine was a single Ho-5 20mm cannon. It is thought that this 20x137mm weapon was fitted in the nose of the "Tei", with the rearward facing being eliminated. This machine gun in the aft of the cockpit being removed from some aircraft. "Tei" became an accomplished night fighter.
