The N1K1-J Shiden's fuselage, inherited from the seaplane, was extremely long. The Shidenkai (N1K2-J) had a wing moved to a lower-position, redesigned tail, and other improvements. The original went into production in 1943 and was assigned the Allied code name of George. However, moving the propeller shaft higher caused the gears to be positioned more horizontally which created vibrations. The full potential of the Homare engine could not be brought out and it was hard to maintain.
