March, 1939 saw the completion of its first plane which succeeded in the maiden flight on 1 April. It was formally adopted and assigned to the Navy Type Zero Fighter Carrier in July, 1937. Since its assignment until the end of the war, it performed the role of the leading motive power of the now-defunct Japanese Air Force. Especially by about the middle of the war period, it found no enemy for its excellent maneuverability, fire amrs and long flying range, manned by the skilled pilots, and enjoyed the fame as the Zero Fighter in the world.
