The type entered service in 1935 and its first operational deployment came in 1936 during war in Ethiopia. The Ro.37bis version had more powerful engine and improved aerodynamics. In Spanish Civil War, the type proved to be rather obsolete, but despite that it was still in operational use with Italian units when Italy entered WW2 in June 1940. The Ro.37s were used mainly for artillery spotting duties and in anti-partisan operations. They saw service in North Africa, Sicily, the Balkans and also in Russia. The type was also exported to several countries, including Afghanistan, Austria, Ecuador, Hungary and Uruguay. Some Hungarian machines were deployed to Eastern front too.
