In September 1944, with Germany under continual day and night Allied bombing, the German Air Ministry issued a call for proposals for a simple to control and easy to produce single-engined jet fighter. A design named Volksjager (People's Fighter) from Heinkel was selected. It was a top speed machine (750km\/h), flight endurance over 30 minutes and a service ceiling of 500m. As many as 7 companies, including Messerschmitt and Arado, submitted proposals, but Heinkel's was chosen because it promised the shortest time span and that could be constructed in a relatively short time.
