The Fw 190A was powered by air-cooled radial engine BMW 801 and proved to be an immediate success. It was superior to the Spitfire V, the main fighter of the RAF at that time. The Fw 190 A-3 version featured enhanced armor protection for the engine and wings, and was armed with two fuselage-mounted MG 17s, two wing-mounted MG 151\/20 cannon and two outboard MG FF cannon. The A-3 was also able to carry a droptank and bombs. A total of 910 of the A-3 version were built from Spring to Autumn of 1942.
