Description

The Fw190 was designed as an auxiliary fighter for the Luftwaffe's mainstay Messerschmitt Bf109 series. It was powered by a radial engine -- rare in a European fighter design. The Fw190 was a brilliant design, with a robust airframe and high performance characteristics thanks to its high horsepower to weight ratio. Based on the earlier A-3, the A-4 can be said to be the first "definitive" A model. Improvements accumulated since the first A-0, including a forward shift of the airframe center-of-gravity by 150mm, were all factored into the production model A-5. The A-5 inherited its basic fixed armament package from the A-4, and while few "straight" A-5s were produced, the type was the base of many variant models. From March 1944, Fw190A series production shifted to the A-8 model, and the fitting of F-3 equipment to the A-8 resulted in the F-8 production model. Many F-8s produced from September 1944 were fitted with the "blown" "Galland Haube" rear canopy – a design feature intended to improve pilot visibility. The F-8 was also fitted with an ETC71 light bomb rack. The F-8 was the most produced model of the "F" fighter bomber series. Many "R" subtypes were stationed at front line bases as quick response ground attack aircraft, with special armament payloads ranging from anti-tank rockets to anti-shipping bombs.
