Based on the Fairey P.4\/34, it entered service in 1940 and remained active until 1945. Though slower than single-seat fighters, it was the FAA’s main fighter early in the war. Fulmars saw action in the Mediterranean, Arctic convoys, and Indian Ocean, scoring victories and serving in fighter-recon roles. Two variants were built: Mk I with a Merlin VIII engine, and Mk II with a Merlin 30.
